Morning Hummer in the Hood

Dear dirty old perv,

Take your dirty habits elsewhere. I am sick of seeing young girls in cars with dirty old men like you, as I am trying to load my child off to swimming lessons.

I can tell from your response that you don't really want any publicity, but I could care less.

You are a disgusting creep, and should know better.

That is all.

FYI

Beware the jackass trying to get your money for shoddy work. I guess that the idea of claiming space to city property is annoying in itself. It's like the people who put pilons and bricks down in front of their home to ensure a parking space. L A M E.
Welcome to the big city people.

Anyoo...this guy goes around soliciting your money to paint your address on the street in front of your place. If you say no, he will persist. I have this on good authority.
If you don't pay him, like our elderly old school Chinese neighbours, he will return in the middle of the night to yell and bang on your door and threaten you. I know that he has done this at least twice.

He has also threatened to spray paint someone who got into his face and told him to piss off. This particular woman didn't want her curb painted.
The guy is a kook.

And besides all that, his workmanship sucks. Now you know.

Strathcona Resident's Patrol

Parents, stroller walkers and child owners!
This is our chance to get active and make a difference in our own neighbourhood.

The Resident's Association has decided to organize a resident's patrol called the "Roam" with help, training and liability form the VPD and Chinatown Policing Centre. Sign up and make your daily strolling into an aware and purposeful presence on the streets with our very own vests and name badges. Get to meet other neighbours and learn about safety issues concerning Strathcona. Read more below and be sure to reply to me to get your name on the list.

The Strathcona Residents Association invites your input on a proposal to establish a resident’s patrol in Strathcona.

Constable Colin Downton of the Vancouver Police Department and Chris Beach, retired cop turned director of the Chinese Community Policing Centre (CCPC) have offered to collaborate with the SRA to establish a residents patrol organization.

We're tentatively calling it the Strathcona Roamers, or Roam. (Proposals for a catchy name are welcome.)

The Strathcona Roam would be an organized group of trained volunteers who would walk the neighbourhood in small groups of three or four in order to:

1) Provide a positive and regular presence of residents in the streets, parks and lanes of Strathcona to improve the sense of well-being in the neighbourhood and reduce the vulnerability of our area to criminal activity and street disorder.

2) Provide a proactive way for residents to contribute to the community, meet their neighbours, get to know the neighbourhood, and become aware of current issues our area may be facing.

The Strathcona Roam’s shifts will focus on a few specific goals to be determined by the SRA. Examples of goals could be:
• Create a positive presence in parks and school areas.
• Interrupt and reduce sex trade activity in residential areas.
• Reduce car theft and theft from cars
• Identify places where there is drug use or dealing

Roamers are not expected to intervene in any criminal activity they may witness. They would just keep their distance and phone 911.

The Roam’s focus may change according to varying situations such as closed schools during holidays, rashes of break-ins or arsons. Roamers might sometimes distribute leaflets or other info (e.g. to cyclists asking them to slow down, use lights at night, exercise caution at the linear park; or to neighbours to remind them to close windows, keep valuables out of sight, etc.).

Patrol shifts will be about two hours, and may be during the day or night (depending on needs or specific goals). Each “roamer” will be able to volunteer for a shift and area they feel strongly about. Dog owners and parents of young children might even be able to maintain their own basic walking routines while doing a roam, but now will be trained to look out for specific things. Cell phones are not required but are an asset. Roamers can pick their own start- and end-points for their patrol.

On an active Strathcona Roam, volunteers will be clearly identifiable by their bright vests with SRA logos. The Roam will be updated by the police as to current issues in the neighbourhood and can likewise inform police about local matters they may not be aware of. Each patrol shift will prepare a brief report to email.

For liability reasons, all volunteers must have a VPD criminal record check. The CCPC will conduct an evening training session (no longer than two hours) for all volunteers at the Strathcona Community Centre, after which they will all receive volunteer badges (photo ID) and vests. The criminal record check, training, vests, and ID are free. Sometime this summer, we'll organize a barbecue or party for the Roamers.

These are the People in my Neighbourhood

We called the police today to have some "creepy uncle" moved along. He's been here and there for quite awhile now and it's getting to be really annoying. There is nothing wrong with a guy living in his car, but this fellow in the Jimmy was usually smoking crack or entertaining various ladies in the back of his car!

We decided to call the non-emergency line, since there was no imminent danger, and they were SO helpful. They sent a lady cop out, but he'd temporarily gone to re-stock on some supplies so she left, telling us to call if he came back.

He did come back and we called again, and again, they were SOOO helpful. They sent the car out again, but before they got here, I'd seen that he'd gone again. Arrgh. I thought they would never connect.

Then he re-appeared, with a fresh hooker and she tumbled into the back and he into the front.
Suddenly the squad car pulled up and I could see her talking and gesturing to him.
She notified him that there was a school a block away, and that some of the neighbours had called to complain. One of them was actually sweeping up some of the garbage that he'd pitched out of the side of his car.

Bleh. We're tired of guys like this hanging around, and it seems that the non-emergency officers are more than happy to get out of the office to assist.
We plan on continuing on harassing his ass until he grows tired of it!

Creepy Abduction Van Alert!

"The North Vancouver RCMP have requested that we notify our community
of several suspicious occurances.

On Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at approximately 1510hrs, two female
and one male elementary students were walking home when they were
approached by a black van with painted lettering "Babysitter" on the
back of the van. The male driver, said "Hi" several times to gain
the students attention. The male told them that mom hired him as
their babysitter and to get in the van. The youths ran to the
Crossing Guard and they lost sight of the van.

Further to this incident, there have now been four sightings of this
van around schools in the North Vancouver and West Vancouver areas.
During two of these incidents, children were approached by the van
and spoken to by the male driver. In the other incidents the
vehicle was witnessed driving in the vicinity of schools, however no
children were involved.

The vehcile description is a black van with the word "babysitter" on
the rear of the van in white lettering. The suspect description is
as follows: Dark skinned male with dark ear length hair, small
moustache, goatee, and wearing red clothing.

If you witness this van, please note the licence plate number and
call 9-1-1 immediately. Quote File #07-4034."

Neighbourhood Meeting

Someone put this flyer through my door.

"Are you concerned about a recent increase in drug dealing and other criminal activity in this area? Since police foot patrols have been going on between Main and Hastings to downtown, criminal elements have moved to the Strathcona area, resulting in an increase in drug dealing and other illegal activities in our neighbourhood. Come for a discussion about what we, as concerned residents, can do about this issue"
